When milling is the right choice

Milling suits parts that are mostly flat faces, pockets, slots and holes at different angles: brackets, housings, plates, fixtures. A 5-axis machine reaches several faces in one clamping.

Round parts with a single axis are cheaper turned. Thin parts that can be cut flat and bent are cheaper in sheet metal. If your part is a mix, we route it and tell you why.

Design rules that cut cost

  1. Match inside corners to the toolGive inside corners a radius larger than the cutter radius. A sharp inside corner needs a smaller tool or a second operation.
  2. Keep pockets shallowDeep, narrow pockets need long, thin tools that flex. Widen the pocket or make it shallower.
  3. Use standard hole sizesStandard drill and thread sizes use tools the shop already has. Odd diameters need a bore or a special tool.
  4. Tolerance only functional featuresBearing seats and sealing faces get their own tolerance. Everything else stays on ISO 2768-m.
  5. Cut the number of setupsEvery extra clamping adds time and stack-up error. Keep features reachable from as few sides as you can.
