When turning is the right choice

Turning suits parts that are round around one axis: shafts, bushes, fittings, pins, spacers. Diameters, shoulders, grooves, threads and bores are all cut while the part spins.

Flats, keyways and cross holes need a milling operation after turning. Parts that are mostly faces and pockets are cheaper milled. If your part is a mix, we route it and tell you why.

Design rules that cut cost

  1. Add thread run-outs and undercutsA thread or a ground seat that ends at a shoulder needs a relief groove. Without it the tool cannot finish the last turns.
  2. Keep slender parts stiffLong, thin shafts deflect under the tool. A steadier length-to-diameter ratio, or a centre bore at the end, keeps the diameter true.
  3. Use standard threads and radiiMetric threads and common corner radii use inserts the shop already has. Special profiles need special tools.
  4. Tolerance only functional diametersBearing seats and sealing diameters get their own tolerance or fit. Everything else stays on ISO 2768-m.
  5. Group milled featuresFlats, keyways and cross holes cost a second clamping. Put them on as few sides as you can.
